How Do I Track Website Leads From the Marketing Source to the Inquiry?
Track the acquisition source at the landing session, preserve campaign context through the visit, record the conversion event, and carry a defensible correlation into the accepted inquiry and eventual sale.

Direct answer
To track a website lead back to marketing, capture the acquisition source when the visitor arrives, preserve that context through the session, record the actual conversion event, and attach a defensible source or correlation identifier to the inquiry. Then reconcile the inquiry with the authoritative customer or payment record. UTM parameters help identify campaigns, but they are only the beginning. The measurement chain must survive from click to lead to revenue.
DSDillon Measurement Health Check examines whether traffic source, session, conversion, inquiry and commercial outcomes can be connected with first-party evidence.
Run Measurement Health CheckWhat information should be captured when the visitor first arrives?
At minimum, preserve the landing page, timestamp, referrer where available, campaign source, medium and campaign identifiers, and a first-party visitor or session identifier that does not depend on fragile page-to-page query strings. Standard UTM parameters such as utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign are widely used to identify campaign traffic.
Keep your naming convention consistent. “linkedin”, “LinkedIn” and “li” may describe the same source to a human but fragment reporting if your system treats them as different values.
Is a UTM link the same as attribution?
No. A UTM link provides acquisition metadata at the click. Attribution is the process of preserving and interpreting that evidence through the customer journey. If the visitor lands on one page, navigates for ten minutes, returns tomorrow, calls from another device and buys a week later, the original UTM string alone does not resolve the entire journey.
Treat UTM values as observed campaign evidence, not a license to invent certainty. Keep the raw source data and document the attribution rule used to connect it to a lead.
What counts as a website lead?
Define this before building dashboards. A form submission can be a conversion event, but it may be spam, a vendor pitch or an unqualified inquiry. A phone-button click shows intent to call but does not prove a completed conversation. A chat open is not automatically a sales opportunity.
Separate behavioral conversions from accepted business inquiries. That allows marketing reporting to show both funnel activity and the smaller set of leads the business actually considers qualified.
How do you preserve the source when someone submits a form?
Store the source context server-side with the accepted submission or attach a correlation identifier that can be resolved back to the session. Hidden form fields can carry selected attribution values, but do not rely solely on browser-visible fields that can be overwritten or lost. The server should also record its own submission timestamp and validation result.
Do not stuff the entire browsing history into every lead record. Preserve the minimum evidence needed to support the attribution model and maintain privacy and retention controls.
How do you track phone leads?
Phone attribution is harder because a click-to-call event and an actual call are different facts. At minimum, record the page and acquisition context when the phone action occurs. If the business has an authorized way to connect a completed call or caller identity to the inquiry, reconcile those records separately.
Do not report every phone click as a qualified lead. That inflates performance and makes paid and organic channels look better than they are.
How do you connect an inquiry to a sale?
The authoritative sale belongs in the billing, commerce or CRM system that records the actual customer outcome. Connect that record back to the inquiry using a defensible key such as a customer ID, order ID, explicit lead ID, verified email match or other approved correlation. Preserve the original evidence rather than overwriting it with a guessed source.
This is where marketing attribution becomes commercially useful. The business can compare channels by qualified opportunities, revenue and margin rather than by clicks alone.
What is the difference between first-touch, last-touch and multi-touch attribution?
First-touch credits the original known acquisition source. Last-touch credits the final known source before conversion. Multi-touch models divide or assign credit across several interactions. None is automatically “the truth.” Each is a rule for interpreting incomplete journey evidence.
For a small or mid-sized business, a clear first-touch or last-non-direct model with preserved raw evidence can be more useful than an elaborate multi-touch model nobody can audit. Choose the model based on the decisions the business needs to make.
What breaks lead attribution most often?
Common failures include inconsistent UTM naming, losing source data after the first page, treating every click as a lead, duplicate form events, cross-domain journeys without a correlation plan, privacy tools blocking client-side scripts, staff manually changing lead sources, and revenue systems that cannot be joined back to the inquiry.
The repair starts by identifying the exact point where the evidence chain breaks. Adding another dashboard does not fix a missing identity or conversion contract.
What should a business buy when it needs attribution?
Buy an implementation that connects acquisition, conversion and commercial outcomes, not merely a reporting dashboard. The scope should define source capture, session persistence, conversion taxonomy, server-side or first-party evidence where appropriate, inquiry identity, revenue reconciliation, retention and validation.
Ask the provider to demonstrate what happens when attribution is unknown. A trustworthy system should preserve “unknown” or “unresolved” rather than silently assigning a source.
How should you measure whether the implementation is working?
Test known journeys end to end. Create a controlled tracked visit, submit a valid test inquiry, verify the source context in the accepted lead, and reconcile the downstream record. Then test failure conditions such as a direct return visit or missing referrer. The goal is not 100% attribution. The goal is defensible attribution with explicit uncertainty.
Once the chain works, report source and campaign performance using qualified leads, conversion rate, revenue and acquisition cost alongside traffic metrics.
