UTM Tracking for Leads: How Should a Business Structure Campaign Tags?
Use consistent UTM source, medium, campaign, content and term values, preserve them through the session, and attach acquisition context to the accepted lead instead of relying on dashboard totals alone.

Direct answer
UTM parameters are useful labels for campaign traffic. They work best when the business defines a naming convention before campaigns launch, preserves the values through the conversion path and records them on the lead. Inconsistent tags can fragment one channel into several rows and make attribution harder.
A useful diagnosis separates technical access, relevance, local signals, page quality, conversion paths and measurement before changes are made.
Review marketing attributionDefine the fields before anyone creates links
Decide what counts as source, medium and campaign. For example, the source might be the platform, the medium the traffic type and the campaign the commercial initiative.
Write the convention down so 'facebook', 'Facebook', 'fb' and 'meta' do not become four different values for the same reporting concept.
Tag external campaign links, not ordinary internal navigation
UTMs are designed to describe acquisition traffic. Adding them to internal website links can overwrite session attribution and create false campaign transitions.
For internal components, use event names or first-party journey fields instead.
Preserve the tags when the lead is created
A dashboard view can disappear from the sales process. Store source, medium, campaign, landing page and relevant click identifiers on the accepted lead record when technically appropriate.
That makes it possible to compare marketing data with later qualification, proposal and payment outcomes.
Test cross-domain and payment journeys
If a visitor moves to a booking tool, payment provider or subdomain, confirm the acquisition context survives. Otherwise the payment domain can appear as the referrer or the sale can become 'direct.'
Test representative journeys instead of assuming the analytics configuration works.
Keep raw values and reporting mappings
When campaign names change, preserve the original raw value and map it into reporting groups. Rewriting historic data can make audit trails difficult.
A clear mapping lets the business roll several campaign variants into one management view without losing detail.
